A Description of Three Important Laws Regarding Alcohol in the United States

Tags: ,

The drinking age in the United States has had quite a fascinating history because there have been groups who are for a lower drinking age, groups who want to raise the drinking age, and those who want to ban drinking altogether. What makes this so fascinating about this is that each side has had their time over the course of U.S. history. Ask any Las Vegas DUI Attorney and that individual will probably tell you that the drinking age is certainly a hot topic in the city and has been for years. A Las Vegas DUI lawyer will in all probability see hundreds of cases like this over the course of a year in the city, so they have a vested interest in what the drinking age is and how it has gotten to be what it is today. The pretty short account given will start with Prohibition and end with the current drinking age.

Prohibition was put into action in 1920 when a political group lobbied for a law to end the sale of alcohol because it was seen as an immoral substance. This law was made possible through the 18th Amendment of the U.S. Constitution. The group really wanted to decrease the amount of alcohol consumed in the United States. However even after the law started, people still sold and purchased alcohol in “underground” bars and clubs. This type of regulation was very difficult to enforce simply because the police did not have the man power to find and arrest everyone who bought, sold, and/or manufactured alcohol during this period. In 1933, the alcohol forbiddance was repealed because the movement became very much hated during the beginning of the Great Depression. The 21st Amendment was the new law which outlawed the 18th Amendment.

After Prohibition came to a halt, the legal drinking age varied from state to state. Just about every state law allowed those 18 and older to drink alcohol. Some states, however, only made it possible for 18 year olds to have a lower alcohol content beer or liquor. This started to become unpopular when there were some studies that revealed an increasing number of younger people were getting into accidents because they were driving under the influence of alcohol. The government was then put under a large amount of pressure to do something about this alarming statistic. And, in the 1980s another law concerning a national drinking age was put into effect.

In 1984, the federal government put together a statement that said any state that allowed people to drink under the age of 21 would not receive their revenue. Some say, the drinking age was increased from 18 to 21 nationwide was because of the amount of drunk driving cases by young people all over the country. Others argue that this declaration was a way for the federal government to attempt to wrestle power away from the states. Today, there are many groups of young people and college administrators who have petitioned for the drinking age to be placed back to age 18 or to have the power to determine drinking age to be given back to the states.

There has been plenty of pressure on the government to reduce the drinking age back to 18 again because of issues with college students binge drinking. It will be pretty fascinating to see what happens in the future of the drinking age debate since a lot is at stake for many different groups in the United States.

Some Suggestions to Help Someone Decide Whether a Profession is one that Will Provide Happiness to Him

Tags: ,

All of the training in the world could not have prepared Lisa for becoming a Las Vegas DUI attorney. She found that no matter how hard she tried to keep her schedule somewhat free to accommodate her three young sons and their many activities there was no way she could guarantee that she would be available. Just the sheer volume of calls to her office from people needing the services of a Las Vegas DUI lawyer made her feel out of control and overworked. She discovered shortly after graduating from law school that she was not enjoying the legal disciplines of her job and she knew she needed to make a career change for her own piece of mind.

Unfortunately, this sort of experience is common to many people who discover after they have completed the necessary schooling for their chosen profession that they do not enjoy the actual work of practicing it. How does this happen and how can it be prevented? Several things can lead someone to choose a profession that is not correct for them and a few of them are as follows:

Sometimes an impressionable teenager can be swayed into thinking that they would like to replicate the life of someone they admire very much someone they look up to including adopting the profession of this person. This is a recipe for failure because our chosen careers should always be based upon our personalities and the work that makes us happy. While admiring someone and looking into what they do for a living should always be encouraged, it is essential for everyone to pick what works best for them when it comes to work choices.

It is possible to participate in what is known as job shadowing where a young person is afforded the chance to visit for at least a day watching the actions of a professional to see just what a typical day for them entails. While being an attorney or a doctor can seem to be glamorous on the surface there is still a lot of boring paperwork required for each job and that can easily be observed when a person spends an entire day watching what he or she does on a daily basis. At the same time this gives a person the opportunity to see the various satisfactions that accompany a job also.

There are many aptitude tests that can be utilized to determine just what talents and strengths a person has and how that can be translated into a job that requires these same strengths. Many times a job or profession will be brought to light that had not even been considered by the applicant and it broadens the job selection base for the person.

Consulting a career guidance counselor at a high school or even a local community college will increase the career choices and give other options to a person who is considering a profession. Finding out the qualifications for the job and the amount of money it will pay in the future are great facts to know before taking classes to prepare for work in that particular field.
